The stunning young lady pushed the button and the roulette span in multiple images on the huge video walls. Hundreds of eyes were watching. When the ball stopped at number 9, her question was revealed. “I don’t have a crystal ball” she replied while nervously fidgeting with the lace detail on her luxurious Tanja Dexters cocktail dress. “But I do hope I make it in the fashion business and if that doesn’t happen, I will go back to completing my university studies and making a difference in children’s lives by teaching them foreign languages.”
Indeed, life is a roulette – sometimes a Russian one, if we get too defiant and courageous - or a box of chocolates according to dearest Forest Gump, who also took his chances in life: “You never know what you’re gonna get”. The seemingly naïve movie character made the bold decision to pick several pralines in order to discover the surprise inside; and this is exactly what these pageant girls did on the evening of 19 November 2016 on the stage of the Casino of Knokke.
11 finalists laid their cards on the table and took their chance on a bright modeling career in Belgian and – who knows – world fashion. After a fabulous show with défilés, dance numbers and musical intermissions by LOLA and the Funktastix, the crown landed on the angelic, blonde curls of Belgian-American Shania Labeye who was chosen to be Miss Exclusive 2017 by a jury of 7 prestigious guests: Martine Van Thillo, Frank Massop-Peters, Jill De Greef, An-Katrien Casselman, Tanja Dexters, Annelien Pauwels, and Sarah De Backer.
From now on, press coverage, spotlights, trips and fashion shoots, all lie ahead in a promising horizon. I recently read that “You have to be ready in order to be lucky. You have to put your pieces into play” (The Muse by Jessie Burton). Yes, she is beautiful. Yes, she is elegant. Yes, she has been favored by Tyche. But what her crown will truly represent in the future may actually lie in her choices and strategy of consciously planning the throws of her own dice.
