January is not a bad moment to visit the city of myths and classical beauty. While everyone was recovering from New Year's celebrations, I took the chance to sneak out on a short escape.
True, when the hustle and bustle of the holidays subsides, you can enjoy a quite airport, a calmer flight, less people on the picturesque streets of Plaka round the Acropolis - so you can actually sip on your frappe in peace while gazing at the imposing monument of Lysicrates' Square, and - by the way - the sales.
Museumgoers, but also those who are into Modern Art, will appreciate the Cycladic Art Museum. The collection of these island statues - which are so controversially modern in form - was presented in an intriguing and informative way. Not boring at all and very engaging, with mystical light effects, but also hi-tech elements like touch screens and interactive boards. My favorite part: the last floor with the representation of scenes from the real life in Ancient Greece and the contemporary cafe on the ground floor, quite known on its own for its special interior design.
For the luxury lovers, I recommend Hotel Grande Bretagne at Syntagma Square with its unique cigar lounge Alexander. A covered and secretly heated veranda living room recreated the feel of a British imperial gentleman's club. Greek elements and Mediterranean olive trees mingled with colonial ivory sculptures and gold-plated framed paintings of royal themes.
And last but, definitely, not least, the walks on the glamorous Voukourestiou street in Kolonaki where I discovered the Pasaji: A covered passage filled with brasseries and cafes for an after-theater experience. Pleasant that the same music was playing for all bars, so a classy homogeneity was maintained - jazzy tunes of modern mashups and renditions of popular music swiveled in the air. Atmosphere and cocktails 12 points. Well, for the food I will have to wait till next time...
