Have you ever had a close encounter with any of those outstanding rarities whose knowledge about cigars extends further than their last sensation of scent, their final spec of residue or their lingering after-taste? Quite an experience, I can assure you, especially if you are open to trying and learning about something new. Even if you are the least accustomed to hearing about thick cepos and fine draws, since you don't share a roof with one of those tobacco leaf geeks, a good opportunity to quench your curiosity would be to take a sip on the Encuentro de Amigos de Aroma de Cuba. No, this is not about the latest Cuban roll or cocktail that has rocked the scene of party-goers this summer, but about a sprightly celebration of friends in the international cigar community organized annually by the Bruges-based club, Aroma de Cuba.
Traditionally, every Encuentro is dedicated to new and well-established friendship and every year some old-fashioned rule is bound to be broken. The drone that flew over the guests’ heads at the elegantly decorated terrace of Knokke Out took those who spotted it by surprise. Such a panoramic capturing of scenes from the vibrant reception was an innovation compared to the usually conventional cigar events, but was well-received by the aficionados present. I could grasp a few smiles and giggles in-between the murmurs of the live saxophone, while the little intruder made its short buzzing appearance hovering over loose curls, cleavages and clouds of whimsically exhaled smoke in an attempt to catch the attention of the metal bumble bee. It brought us in the spotlight, we felt individually significant and yet closer together.
As fragrances of No5 drops and well-fermented tobacco of the 6 premium cigars offered by La Casa Del Habano Knokke mingled in the air, I couldn’t help but notice the profuse elegance of the 150 guests. Dress code, manners, posture, they radiated a quality of dignified demeanor, which was in accordance with the minimal yet imposing interior décor of Knokke Out, the electrifying ambiance of the funk music and the robotic light installations. The dinner was lavish as usual, but the buffet format blew a looser breeze over this bittersweet farewell to the summer of 2016.
Now that the curtain “falls”, a new chapter of events unfolds and I am intrigued to find out more about my next enriching encounter with the world of ADC.
