Many and complex are the questions that we usually pose about necessities in life.
What do we truly need and what does happiness entail?
What is actually defined as "necessity"?
On the one hand, drinkable water is absolutely vital for survival and on the other hand, caviar-based hydration creams are considered necessary for smooth skin and a radiant complexion. I assume there must be different answers for different people, just as everyone has a personal perspective of life and what this means to them.
Discovering the work of Belgian jewelry designer Sophie de Sutter recently shed some light on what can contribute to improving my every day: sparkle, playfulness and contemporary charm are the main traits of her work. Sophie has been designing jewelry for 25 years in Dendermonde.
Her 4-year Jewelry Design studies in Antwerp have helped her develop her design skills and hand-craftsmanship, as well as advance her capacity for structured creation. Her outstanding bronze, silver and gold collections at quite affordable prices are more than attractive and add a spark of glamour to a casual outfit, but are also perfectly compatible with an evening gown. Her materials: precious metals or gold-plated silver with pink or yellow gold, pearls, leather, precious or semi-precious stones, glass and zircon. You can easily create your own set and combine a necklace with a bracelet, a ring or earrings, because she offers the same motifs - for instance, the Van-Cleef-and-Arpels-like flower or the Louis-Vuitton-inspired star models - in a vast variety of colors, ranging from quiet pastels and royal blues to intriguing khakis and passionate bordeauxs. "Color" being the strongest word here, "does not add a pleasant quality to design - it reinforces it" (Pierre Bonnard).
Observing the pieces with the pink and mother-of-pearl elements, I could easily picture the most elegant Belgian lady of all times making an appearance wearing them. The perfect match for Audrey Hepburn's girly femininity and captivating nearly adolescent optimism: "I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles" (Audrey Hepburn).
There is no magic pill, no tangible thing on which happiness depends. A piece of jewelry may not bring bliss on its own, yet a ring so dazzling and smartly made adjustable to any finger size - whether offered as a token of love or bought as a confirmation of one's personal success - can trigger a smile. And that is merely the beginning to a positive attitude towards life. We don't need jewels, but like a Kandinsky painting (the designer's favorite and a source of inspiration), a fresh melting chocolate muffin, or a favorite oldie on the radio, they simply make life more beautiful. Now, wouldn't you be tempted to add a pair of impressive Caribbean Sea blue earrings from Sophie's colorful world to your must-have list?
